Google previews Gemini 4 Carbon for cyber defenders and GitHub adds usage-based Copilot billing

Today: a new Google frontier model released first to security teams, GitHub's Copilot changes announced at Universe, AI assistants and agent access coming to Apple's office apps, and Google putting more ads into its AI search answers.

Google announces Gemini 4 Carbon, available first to a limited group of cyber defenders

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October, calling it its strongest model so far, aimed at cybersecurity and long, multi-step tasks. From this week it is available only to a subset of cyber defenders, with access widening gradually to trusted partners through Google's Fairwind Program; there is no date yet for developers, businesses or consumers. Google lists introductory API pricing of 2 dollars per million input tokens and 10 dollars per million output tokens, rising to 4 and 20 dollars afterwards. Most of the benchmark results Google cites, including those for finding and patching vulnerabilities, come from its own testing.

    What it means for you

Unless your organisation takes part in Google's limited programme, you cannot use Carbon yet, so there is nothing to switch today. If you plan budgets for API use, note that the standard price is double the introductory one, and judge the model on your own tasks once it becomes available.

GitHub introduces Copilot Fusion model routing and lets Enterprise customers pay per use for Copilot

At its Universe conference on 28 October, GitHub introduced Copilot Fusion, which decides which AI model or combination of models handles each step of a coding task, and a more thorough code review option called Copilot code review Max. GitHub Enterprise customers can now use Copilot features without a separate Copilot subscription and pay for the AI credits they consume; for now this is arranged through GitHub's sales team, with self-service to follow. Existing Copilot Business and Enterprise customers can keep their current plans. GitHub also reports that by September more than 40 percent of pull requests on the platform started as a draft written by an agent.

    What it means for you

If your company uses GitHub Enterprise, compare per-use billing with your current per-seat licences before switching, and set spending limits so agent work does not produce unexpected bills. Automated code review can help, but a person should still approve changes before they are merged.

Apple adds an AI assistant and agent access through MCP to Keynote, Pages and Numbers in November

Apple announced on 27 October that a November update to its Apple Creator Studio subscription will add a beta assistant to Keynote, Pages and Numbers, built on Apple models and OpenAI, for drafting text, designing slides and working with spreadsheet data. The assistant needs an Apple Intelligence-capable device on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 and is available in US English only. On macOS 27 the three apps will also support the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that lets external AI agents read documents, edit them and run automated actions. Apple has not yet published details of how permissions for these agents are granted.

    What it means for you

If you work in Croatian or another language, the assistant will not be available to you at launch. MCP access lets outside AI tools change your documents, so before connecting an agent, check what it can do and keep copies of important files.

Google is expanding ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode to more international markets

During Alphabet's quarterly results call on 28 October, Google said it is extending ads shown within AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search to more users, queries and international markets, and is adding multi-turn ads in AI Mode in the United States. The company did not name the new countries. According to TechCrunch, growth in Google's Search revenue slowed to 12 percent in the quarter, from 17 percent in the previous one.

    What it means for you

AI-generated search answers may increasingly sit next to paid content, so check whether a recommendation is marked as sponsored before relying on it. If your business advertises on Google, watch for when these formats reach your market and how they are reported in your campaigns.
